Formosa Plastics Corporation, U.S.A. employees recently participated in a STEM Career Day at Smith STEM Academy as part of the company’s ongoing community engagement efforts, engaging students in hands-on learning focused on science and engineering concepts.

On March 12, 2026, Training & Development Manager Shawn Wehmeyer and Training & Development Coordinator Patrick Muse led interactive sessions for pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade students. The activities introduced basic principles of distillation and material balance in a way that was accessible and engaging for younger audiences.

Students adjusted valves and observed how levels are maintained in a distillation column, providing a simplified look at processes used in industrial operations. The demonstration helped connect classroom learning to real-world applications in manufacturing and engineering, similar to programs supported through the Formosa Agriculture & Ecology Research Center (AERC).

The team also demonstrated how molecules respond to changes in temperature. Using different materials, liquid nitrogen and heat, students observed how substances contract and expand. These demonstrations showed how temperature can affect shape and strength.

The event provided an opportunity for students to explore STEM concepts through hands-on experiences while learning about potential career paths in science, technology and manufacturing. These efforts build on other community and education initiatives, including student visits to the Formosa-Tejano Wetlands, education partnerships in Jackson County and broader community programs such as the Calhoun County recycling initiative.

Formosa Plastics Corporation, U.S.A. continues to support education and community engagement efforts that promote STEM learning and help inspire future generations of innovators.
