Formosa Plastics Provides a $670,000 Grant

POINT COMFORT, TX (Thursday, Dec. 4, 2025) – On Thursday, Dec. 4, 2025, Formosa Plastics Corporation, Texas joined Calhoun County and the Cities of Point Comfort and Port Lavaca to celebrate the opening of a new county recycling center. Formosa had contributed a $670,000 grant to Calhoun County for construction of the recycling center. Additionally, Formosa has been working with the cities of Point Comfort and Port Lavaca to cover the costs of pilot programs totaling about $160,000 to offer convenient curbside recycling services.

Calhoun County Judge Lyssy said, “It started with a simple phone call and a good idea three years ago and then turned into a great thing! This type of project does not happen overnight. This is a result of two cities, a county and industrial leaders coming together for the greater good of its people and its environment and I could not be more proud of our teamwork and efforts. When great leaders work together the entire region benefits.”

Point Comfort City Councilman John Warren said, “As an elected official and citizen of Point Comfort, I was pleased when Formosa attended a city council meeting and proposed a recycling pilot program at no cost to the residents. This great opportunity introduced recycling, which was a first for our community and has resulted in tremendous support by our citizens, which is reflected in the low contamination rate of our collected recycled materials. We are very appreciative of Formosa Plastics and Republic Services for bringing this opportunity to our city. Recycling is certainly the future and will have a lasting positive impact on our environment.”

Port Lavaca City Manager Jody Weaver said, “The cost of collection and transport will be minimized with the completion of this facility and thus the affordability of curbside recycling for the residents of Port Lavaca is finally coming into view.”

Formosa Plastics Administration Director Eric Stevenson said, “Calhoun County expressed its desire to expand recycling opportunities for its residents and Formosa was pleased to be able to help establish the infrastructure to make that possible. This new center is a first-step, but a major step in laying the groundwork for a successful program in the region. The enthusiasm of our local commercial businesses such as Inteplast and Seadrift Coke and support from our state and federal leaders has been inspiring. We want to make a positive impact for future generations and look forward to working with the school district and local industry in the years to come.”

Republic Services Coastal Bend & South Texas Municipal Services Manager Mike Reeves said, “Thanks to the generosity of Formosa Plastics, we now have a collaboration of sustainability between two neighboring cities and a county we provide service to. We are proud to be a partner in our communities and thank all who made this happen. We now have two curbside recycling programs in action and this facility is paving the way to a low carbon footprint.”

The Calhoun County Recycling Center is located at 900 Landfill Road in Port Lavaca, Texas. It is open Friday and Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. except holidays.
