POINT COMFORT, Texas (Aug. 4, 2026) — When the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center contacted Formosa Plastics Corporation, Texas about a severe blood shortage, the company responded by organizing a three-day blood drive.
Flooding in Central Texas and storms in East Texas had forced the cancellation of many blood drives at a time when blood supplies were already low nationwide. Formosa invited employees, contractors, and members of the surrounding community to donate.
The South Texas Blood & Tissue Center collected 212 units of blood from 177 donors, reaching 200 percent of the drive’s goal. The donations can help as many as 636 patients across South Texas.
“Our employees always respond when there is a need in the community. Whether there is a request for food, volunteers, or blood, they continually show up and make a difference, and I appreciate their willingness to help,” said Mike Rivet, assistant vice president and general manager of Formosa Plastics Corporation, Texas.
Formosa has approximately 3,000 full-time employees and about 1,000 full-time contractors. The company hosted the drive during the last week of July and provided door prizes and random drawings to encourage participation.
The drive was the largest mobile blood donation event held in South Texas, south of San Antonio, in 2026 at the time of the event. Each of the three days ranked No. 1 for daily blood collections, sign-ups, first-time donors, turnout, and percentage of the collection goal achieved. July 29 was also Formosa’s largest blood collection day in nine years.
These numbers represent more than the success of a blood drive. They represent patients who can receive care when they need it most.
“Formosa employees, contractors, and community, thank you for answering the call and showing what can happen when people come together to help others. Everyone involved should be very, very proud!” said Joby Stortz, regional account manager for the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center.
