Environmental Responsibility - Tejano Agricultural & Environmental Research Center
|
The Tejano Agricultural & Environmental Research Center (AERC) is located on about 10 acres in La Ward, Texas on land owned by Formosa Plastics. Since its creation in 1993, the center has focused in two major areas of R&D:
- Environmental improvement : Trees are known to benefit the environment by providing shelter for wildlife, mitigating soil erosion and purifying the air through absorption of carbon dioxide, release of oxygen, filtering of dust. AERC's experimental and development efforts have led to the planting of thousands of fast-growing evergreen trees in Calhoun County and surrounding areas since the 1990s. Many of these trees are now 30-40 ft tall and are enhancing the environment and local landscapes. In the late 1990s, AERC provided a petrochemical company in East Texas with 6,000 trees inoculated with vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi to assist in the remediation of their chemical waste basins.
- Development of environmental friendly bio-fertilizer with naturally occurring VAM fungi: AERC has developed an efficient system to mass -produce these beneficial fungi for commercial applications in reforestation, horticultural/agricultural production and reclamation of mining areas and eroded lands.
